JCDecaux, one of the largest outdoor communication groups in the world, has just won the street furniture franchise for Salvador in Brazil. The franchise, which runs for twenty years, covers the supply, installation and operation of 5,742 items of furniture and the marketing of some 1,278 advertising surfaces in the city. The Group will begin implementing the contract in September 2000. This is the second such franchise in Latin America to be awarded to the Group this year, following on from the Montevideo contract in Uruguay which the Group clinched in April. As Jean-Charles Decaux, joint CEO, points out, "not only does this latest success mark another milestone in our bid to gain recognition for JCDecaux expertise in this region of the world, it also boosts further our presence on the Brazilian market." JCDecaux Out of Home Media Group has demonstrated its capacity on many occasions to meet the a municipal authority's precise specifications regarding the development and aesthetic qualities of its urban environment. This concession will generate business for the Group of around FRF 630 millions (€ 96 million). Salvador, capital of Bahia state and Brazil's third largest city with a population of 2,100,000, is currently seeing massive growth in tourism as the country's foremost artistic and cultural centre.
